The transition from slow, romantic mood music to Fletch-on-Skates-in-Bearded-Disguise-Out-to-Crack-The-Case-Once-And-For-All at the start of the final act of Fletch.

Question: At the end of Star Wars IV: A New Hope when the gang are dishing out medals to each other for a job well done, are the assembled troops in the hall actually hearing the celebratory music as they do so? And if so, do they also hear it as it transitions into the familiar Star Wars theme? And, therefore, is the Star Wars theme a known and recognised piece of music within the Star Wars universe? And if so, what does that do for John Williams’ royalties?

One of my unofficial hobbies, pointless though it may be, is having fake conversations with the spam MSN/AIM chat bots that occasionally flick up when I start my computer in the morning. I know they’re all automated, but a small part of me hangs on to the hope that somewhere there’s a confused, somewhat alarmed spam marketeer sitting watching my responses and wondering what’s happened to the planet he once loved.

For example:

11:57:15 alfonsokelley49:    hello??
11:58:12 Prezzer: alfonso!!!!!!! long time no see buddy? how’s it hanging? still afflicted with the herpes?
11:58:13 alfonsokelley49: vdsgu Yo prezzer
11:58:25 Prezzer: yo? what are you, twelve?
11:58:27 alfonsokelley49:  whats up…
11:58:53 Prezzer: the usual, the judge gave me 75 years all told, still, i did brutally murder those nuns so she had a point

Hello faithful! I’m back from my over-lengthy vacation to the magical, mystery world that is Japan – fully rested, fighting fit, and counting down the days till we go back next year. Business as usual, really. In keeping with the finest traditions of globe-trotting bores, I thought I’d share some of my holiday photos with you, in order to help share some of the wonder and majesty that is the land of Nippon.

Caveat: I’m not the world’s greatest photographer, so apologies if some of the shots are a touch out of focus and whatnot. Hopefully I won’t lose too much of the flavour of the country. Click on and let us begin our journey…

I find space travel fascinating, real and fictional. My only true regret is being born too early to (presumably) enjoy a futuristic world of personal space transit systems, blasting off to your weekend home on Mars as easily as we jump on the subway today. Assuming a technologically progressive future of democratic harmony of course. If it turns out we’ll all be living in a zombie-infested, irradiated wasteland, battling packs of rabid dogs for our daily portion of fried cockroach and living in patched together enclaves, shotguns by our side and ever-fearful of the local overlords and their fascist gangs of enforcers – well, then slightly packed traffic lanes, an over-dependence on reality TV shows and a distinctly non-space based railway system is just fine by me.

Should I be concerned that the predominent search term that leads people towards these insane ramblings (according to the Blog Stats anyway) is ‘Epic Fail’? It points back to a prior article on naval mishaps (one of my most popularly read until just recently – but only as there was a massive server update going on at the time and people needed alternative EQII outlets) and the fact I labelled one of the pictures with the infamous term.

I also get a lot of hits for ‘Davy Jones’, so I can only assume there’s a large contingent of dyslexic Monkees fans viewing these pages, to whom I say “Hello! How you doing? They didn’t play their own instruments, you know?”

Edit: Also, it appears I’m the number one Google hit for the term ‘Jellyfinger’. To all those of you that arrive here as a result of that searching for that one, I can only apologise. I’m sure one of the other Google results will be more to your taste. Ahem…

Or digital. Or packet streams, or whatever magic it is that powers the internet and makes the pretty pictures on my screen go ‘pop!’

The short version is that I’m half way through updating my client with all the nuggest of Neriak noodles (badly stretched alliteration for teh win!) when the office net connection does its twice-monthly Britney Spears impression and checks itself out of public life and into a walled-off reservation for some much-needed drying out time. In short, I’m net-less in Seattle (well, London but the rain content to Starbucks outlet ratio is pretty comparable). So with one post under my belt and the entire blogosphere already sitting on the edge of their seats awaiting the “difficult second post”, I’m officially apologising for the delay.

I’ve hit the router with a hammer several times so I’m confident of some results fairly quickly and the sparks flying out the back of the thing must indicate some form of life, so fingers crossed!

Don’t expect anything for a few days though. My only EQII access is through work, my home life is presently computer-less due to a bizarre series of accidents involving melted cheese, a moving van and a two-year old with a screwdriver, and it’s a public holiday in these parts on Monday so I won’t be able to create my emo-fae and make the seemingly requisite number of self-harm jokes for EQII bloggers posting on the subject till next week.
